Malang - The research team from the Faculty of Science and Technology, State Islamic University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang has made another proud achievement through innovation in the field of herbal pharmacy. They are Retno Susilowati, Rahmi Annisa, and Maharani Retna Duhita, who succeeded in creating an innovative pharmaceutical preparation in the form of Film Forming Hydrogel (FFH) based on extracts of Habbatussauda seeds (Nigella sativa L.) and Chickpea seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) which are specially formulated to help accelerate the wound healing process.
This innovation was born from a combination of local wisdom in the utilization of herbal plants with a modern pharmaceutical technology approach. This Film Forming Hydrogel preparation has the advantage of being able to form a thin film-like layer over the wound surface, which not only protects the wound area from infection, but also provides direct therapeutic effects from the natural active ingredients used.
In this formulation, 70-80% alcohol extracts of black cumin seeds (Habbatussauda) and Chickpea seeds were used as the main active ingredients. Both plants have been widely recognized in traditional medicine for their high antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The active ingredients are combined with polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl chitosan, as well as propylene glycol as a plasticizer and alcohol as a solvent, resulting in a stable, easy-to-use, and effective hydrogel preparation.
This invention has been officially registered as a patent on behalf of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, with the Faculty of Science and Technology as the patent holder. This is clear evidence of the university's contribution in answering the community's need for a natural, affordable and safe alternative to wound healing.
"Hopefully, this innovation will not only stop at the laboratory table, but can be further developed towards downstream products that can be widely used by the community," said Retno Susilowati on behalf of the research team. She also emphasized the importance of cross-field collaboration in developing this kind of research.
With the presence of this herbal-based FFH preparation, UIN Maliki Malang once again affirms its role as a center of innovation and development of science that is not only rooted in Islamic values, but also oriented towards the benefit of the people at large (am).
