UIN Malang's Faculty of Science and Technology Activates the Spirit of Environmental Care Through the “Green Friday” Movement”

Malang - Every Friday morning, the atmosphere at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University Malang feels different (10/10). Among the busy lectures, lecturers, education staff, and students move together to clean the campus environment in an activity entitled “Green Friday Movement.”

This program is a faculty initiative to foster ecological awareness among the academic community. Every Friday, during working hours, all elements in FST get down to cleaning the yard, garden, and area around the faculty building. This simple activity has a deeper meaning than just cleaning up trash, but also purifying the heart and fostering a sense of responsibility for the earth as God's mandate.

One of the lecturers delivered an inspiring message during the activity, “We are not picking up trash, we are picking up the values of cleanliness of the heart.” The sentence reflects the spirit of ecotheology that is the basis of this movement: humans are not the rulers of nature, but caliphs who are assigned to care for and protect His creation.

Through Green Friday, FST wants to emphasize that cleanliness and care for the environment are part of worship and academic culture. Every sweep of the broom and every small step on the campus grounds becomes a form of dhikr in action, teaching the balance between knowledge, faith, and ecological responsibility.

By noon, the faculty yard looked clean and beautiful, but the most valuable thing was the peace of mind that grew among the participants. This activity not only changes the face of the campus environment, but also shapes the character of the academic community who are civilized towards the earth making Green Friday not just a routine program, but a spiritual movement that affirms adab towards the Creator through caring for His creation.
