History of establishment Faculty of Science and Technology Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (UIN) Malang began with the issuance of a Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutional Development of the Ministry of Religion Number: KEP/E/57/80 on July 3, 1980 concerning the opening of the Tadris Mathematics and English Department at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Sunan Ampel in Malang. The purpose of opening this department is to meet the needs of teachers in Madrasah Tsanawiyah (M.Ts) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA) in the field of general studies, especially the fields of Mathematics and English. This Tadris Department is expected to produce Bachelor of Religion in the field of Tarbiyah Islamiyah who is authorized to teach at Madrasah Tsanawiyah and Aliyah in the fields of Mathematics and English. However, in 1989 these two departments no longer accepted new students because the need for Mathematics and English teachers within the Department of Religion (Depag) at that time was considered to have been fulfilled.
In 1997 the Ministry of Religious Affairs made institutional changes by transforming branch faculties within IAIN throughout Indonesia into State Islamic Colleges (STAIN) based on Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 11 dated March 21, 1997. At that time, the Faculty of Tarbiyah Malang, which was a branch of IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, changed its status to STAIN Malang. Along with these changes, the Tadris Mathematics and Science (Biology) study program was reopened in the Tarbiyah Department in 1997 based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion Number 296 dated June 30, 1997 and the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutional Development No...: E/136/1997 dated June 30, 1997. Graduates of the two Tadris study programs hold a Bachelor of Religion (S.Ag.) degree.
In its development, the Tadris Mathematics and Science (Biology) Study Program under the Tarbiyah department separated and stood alone as the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA) department. This MIPA Department opened a pure Mathematics and Biology Study Program in 2000. With this change, graduates of the Mathematics and Biology study program get a Bachelor of Science (S.Si.) instead of a Bachelor of Religion (S.Ag.). In addition, to become teachers, students of this study program can take part in the Act IV program so that they can have a certificate of authority to teach in primary and secondary schools. The separation of the Mathematics and Biology study programs from the Tarbiyah department is a milestone in the establishment of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The opening of the Faculty of Science and Technology began with the approval of the opening of general study programs at STAIN Malang by the Director General of Higher Education (Director General of Higher Education) of the Ministry of National Education (Depdiknas) based on Director General of Higher Education Letter Number: 3445/D/T/2002 dated November 20, 2002 concerning Recommendations for opening general study programs at STAIN Malang. The general study program consists of 4 (four) departments, namely: Mathematics at the Bachelor program level (S1), Biology at the Bachelor program level (S1), Physics at the Bachelor program level (S1) and Chemistry at the Bachelor program level (S1). Then followed up with the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutions (Dirjen Bagais) regarding the implementation of the 4 (four) study programs above on April 24, 2003, namely: Chemistry Department at the undergraduate level based on Decree No..: DJ.II/59/2003; Department of Physics undergraduate level based on Decree No..: DJ.II/60/2003; Department of Mathematics undergraduate level based on Decree No..: DJ.II/61/2003 and Biology Department undergraduate level based on Decree No.: DJ.II/62/2003: DJ.II/62/2003.
Finally, with the issuance of the Joint Decree of the Minister of National Education and the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 1/0 / SK / 2004 dated January 23, 2004 and followed up with Presidential Decree No. 50 of 2004 dated June 21, 2004 concerning the Change of the State Islamic Institute Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta into Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University and Malang State Islamic College into Malang State Islamic University, there was a comprehensive institutional change in STAIN Malang. The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences turned into the Faculty of Science and Technology based on the Director General of Higher Education Letter Number: 3536 / D / T / 2004 dated September 3, 2004 concerning Recommendations for the Establishment of Faculties within the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University Yogyakarta and Malang State Islamic University which was strengthened by its legality with the Decree of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 389 of 2004 dated September 3, 2004 concerning the Organization and Administration of the State Islamic University of Malang. Based on this decree, there are 6 (six) Faculties at UIN Malang, one of which is the Faculty of Science and Technology. In addition to the four study programs in the MIPA department that have been opened previously, there are an additional 2 (two) new departments, namely Informatics Engineering and Architectural Engineering. Permission to open a department or study program at the Faculty of Science and Technology is based on the Decree of the Director General of Bargais Number DJ.II/54/2005 concerning Permits for Undergraduate Study Programs at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (UIN) Malang.Â
