CITY OF BATU - Commemorating the National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2026, the Environmental Engineering Study Program of State Islamic University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang took concrete action in waste management (03/26). A group of 13 participants-including 6 students, 6 lecturers, and 1 administrative staff-visited the Tlekung Final Processing Site (TPA), Batu City. The visit was led by the Head of UIN Malang Environmental Engineering Study Program, Aulia Fikriarini Muchlis, with the main agenda of handing over four jerry cans of liquid. ecoenzyme self-produced as a natural solution to waste management.

Not only the handover ceremony, the Environmental Engineering students also went directly to spraying the plants. ecoenzyme to the organic waste pile. This step aims to suppress unpleasant odors and accelerate the natural decomposition process in the landfill area. In addition, the UIN Malang team had the opportunity to directly observe the processing flow of organic and inorganic waste. Warm discussions were also held with the landfill managers, namely Pak Taufan, Pak Nanang, and Pak Iwan, who provided in-depth insights into modern waste management.

During the visit, Pak Nanang emphasized that Tlekung Landfill is currently being transformed to erase the negative impression of landfills in general. “We designed this landfill so that it is not synonymous with dirty and slum impression. Instead, we want to present it as a space that is clean, educative, and provides a new experience for every visitor,” said Mr. Nanang when explaining to the students.

Through this activity, UIN Malang Environmental Engineering Study Program hopes that the collaboration between academics and field practitioners can continue. In addition to commemorating HPSN which falls every February 21, this action is proof of the campus's commitment to implementing science for sustainable environmental sustainability. (aulia)
