Biomolecular Seminar S2 Biology: Mini Lecture & RT-PCR Workshop for Halal Research and Industry

FST UIN Maliki Malang - (15/11/2025) The Master of Biology Study Program held a Biomolecular Seminar which was packaged in a mini lecture and workshop format. The event was opened by the Head of the Study Program, Dr. Dwi Suheriyanto, S.Si., M.P., who emphasized the commitment of the study program to improve academic quality, broaden scientific insights, and strengthen networks between students, lecturers, and practitioners. He hopes that this forum will become an inspiring learning space - combining theoretical understanding with practical experience that can be directly applied in biological research and development.

The first session presented Muchammad Nur Cholis, M.Si. (Genecrafts) who reviewed DNA/RNA detection using the RT-PCR method. In addition to discussing reagent selection and quality control so that test results are validated, the speakers also provided tutorials on safe and reproducible laboratory practices, so that participants understood the workflow from sample preparation to data interpretation.

The next material was presented by Maharani Retna Duhita, M.Si., Ph.D. Med. Sc., who highlighted the relevance of RT-PCR in halal product assurance-food, cosmetics, and medicine. With high sensitivity, RT-PCR is able to identify specific DNA (e.g. non-halal contamination such as pig DNA) in very small amounts, thus supporting an objective, fast and repeatable certification process. Through this session, participants deepened the scientific principles of ingredient detection, the mechanism of action of RT-PCR, and its application to contamination testing.

The series of activities continued at the Halal Laboratory; participants participated in a hybrid (online and offline). Offline participants get hands-on: starting from preparation, running RT-PCR, to reading the results according to the test target. The activity was attended by alumni, students, practitioners, and academics engaged in the molecular field.

The committee expressed its appreciation to all speakers and supporting parties for the smooth running of the event. Through this seminar, the Master of Biology Study Program hopes that student laboratory competencies will be honed, collaboration networks will be stronger, and the quality of academic implementation will continue to improve.
