FST UIN Maliki Malang - (13/11/2025) Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang held a guest lecture entitled “From Waste to Functional Materials: Green Chemistry and Sustainability Approach to Materials Development”. This activity took place in the Chemistry Discussion Room and was attended by students and lecturers of the Chemistry Study Program.
The guest lecture presented Prof. Dr. Is Fatimah, S.Si., M.Si., Professor of Chemistry FMIPA Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta, as the main speaker. The event was opened by the Head of the Chemistry Study Program of UIN Malang A. Ghanaim Fasya, M.Si., as well as remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Dr. Agus Mulyono, M.Kes.
In her presentation, Prof. Is Fatimah explained the application of green chemistry and sustainability principles in the development of waste-based materials. Waste is seen as a potential resource that can be converted into functional materials such as adsorbents, catalysts, and composite materials, while supporting the concept of sustainability and reducing environmental impacts.
In addition, the importance of using environmentally friendly synthesis methods and life cycle analysis (Life Cycle Assessment) to ensure the environmental benefits of the materials developed. This activity was guided by Himmatul Barroroh, M.Si. as the moderator and continued with an interactive discussion between participants and speakers.
Through this guest lecture, the Chemistry Study Program of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang hopes to increase academic insight, foster awareness of sustainable research, and encourage research collaboration between universities.
In addition to the guest lecture, this activity was also coupled with a joint research discussion between the Chemistry team of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang and the Chemistry Department of UII Yogyakarta as an effort to strengthen academic and research collaboration. Representatives from UII Yogyakarta who attended included Prof. Dr. Is Fatimah (Head of the Chemistry Department), Dr. Tatang Shabur Julianto, M.Si. (Head of Chemistry Master Program), Gani Purwiandono, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Head of Chemistry Bachelor Program), Lina Fauzi'ah, M.Sc. (Head of Chemistry Education Bachelor Program), Nurcahyo Iman Prakoso, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Secretary of Chemistry Bachelor Program), as well as department and study program staff.
Meanwhile, from UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, several lecturers explained the focus of excellent research, including A. Ghanaim Fasya, M.Si. who presented research on heavy metal elicitation and phytoremediation using Hydrilla verticillata, Dr. Elok Kamilah Hayati, M.Si. who presented metabolomic studies of earring plants, and Dr. Anik Ma'unatin, M.P. who discussed the chemistry of food products and exopolysaccharides.
Through this guest lecture and research discussion, it is hoped that there will be a sustainable synergy between UIN Maliki Malang and UII Yogyakarta in developing innovative, environmentally friendly, and sustainable chemical research.
